Candle making equipment – Everything you need for candle making

If you have decided to delve into the wonderful world of candle making, then you will definitely be in need of the right candle making equipment. People have been making candles for centuries and it remains a very popular pastime in the new millennium.
You can make just about any candle shape that you can dream up. Besides the normal candle stick of early days, there are many novelty candles about these days – from exquisite works of art to the very humorous xxx rated candles.
So now that you are excited to be embarking on this rewarding hobby, what exactly are you going to need?

  1. A heat source. This is basically either your kitchen stove or a burner of some description.
  2. A pot to melt the wax in. A double boiler is preferable, although a smaller pot placed inside another pot will suffice.
  3. A thermometer to tell how hot your wax is. Never try to assume or guess how hot the wax is, and always remember that wax can explode if it gets too hot.
  4. Candle Molds – there is a myriad of molds on the market today. Always have it ready when your wax is melted and be prepared.
  5. Dipping can. These are used in taper candles to dip your wick into.
  6. Kitchen scales. The best option is a digital postal scale as opposed to a spring type of scale. Scales are used when it comes to the accuracy of the weight of wax, additive and fragrances.
  7. Baking pan to clean up your molds.
  8. Sharp cutting instrument, to trim wicks and cut wax. You can use whatever you prefer eg: scissors, razor blades or a craft knife.
  9. Hammer and screwdriver – to break you wax apart. Wax can be quite difficult to break as it comes in large chunks.
  10. Mold sealers or wick sealers – prevents the wax leaking out of the hole where the wick is threaded.
  11. Mold releasers – this is used the same way as you would use baking spray in cooking. It is sprayed inside your mold for easy release of your candle.
  12. Wax glue – to adhere your decorations to the side of your candle.
  13. Wick tabs – use these to anchor your wick to the base of your candle.
  14. Fire extinguisher – never underestimate how volatile wax can be. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Now, you may be thinking that this is quite an extensive list. However, if you are going to make candles the correct way, then you need to have all the necessary equipment to make the perfect candle.
Most craft stores or candle suppliers will have all the above items, and you will no doubt have a few of them at home already, so that narrows the list. Take your list with you when you are ready to purchase and you will find that all you require will be in the one store, making it a very easy venture.
Please remember to take due care when working with wax. If you are sensible and organized then I have no doubt that you will thoroughly enjoy your new hobby!
